Reflections from the President of the Faculty of Public Health

An address by the President of the Faculty of Public Health at the Train the Trainer event on 28th June 2022, to thank all Public Health professionals across the East Midlands for their work during the pandemic, and to recognise the continued efforts to improve health and reduce inequalities across the region.

Health Careers

Health Careers (www.healthcareers.nhs.uk) includes information about more than 350 roles in health (including public health), real-life stories and videos, a course-finder, plus news and events. It is for those of any age thinking about a career in health, and those who’ve already started a career in health and are thinking about their next step. 

Faculty of Public Health

The Faculty of Public Health (FPH) is the standard setting body for specialists in public health. It works to improve the public's health through our three key areas of activity: education and standards, professional affairs, advocacy and policy. There is a specific section on PH training.

Public Health England

Public Health England (PHE) is the government body set up on 1 April 2013 to  provide the leadership and coordination of public health activity in England.  PHE staff may work in PHE centres across the country, in knowledge management, health improvement, health protection and healthcare public health.  The main website: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-health-england has links to:

  • The health protection section, which provides impartial advice and authoritative information on health protection issues to the public, to professionals and to government 
  • The data and knowledge management sections, (APHO) represents and coordinates a network of 9 Public Health Observatories (PHOs) working across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. APHO facilitates joint working across PHOs towhich have produce information, data and intelligence on people's health and healthcare for practitioners, policy makers and the wider community.

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

NICE has issued guidance on a number of key public health topics such as obesity, physical activity and environment, community engagement and the mental wellbeing of children in primary education. This guidance is aimed not only at the NHS, but also those with public health responsibilities, including local authorities, transport, education and the voluntary sector. http://www.nice.org.uk/

National Social Marketing Centre

The National Social Marketing Centre is a strategic partnership between the Government (Department of Health) and National Consumer Council in England. The NSM Centre was established to increase understanding and use of effective social marketing approaches at national and local levels and work across sectors to build capacity and skills. http://www.nsmcentre.org.uk/

Royal Society of Public Health

The Royal Society of Health and the Royal Institute of Public Health have merged to become a new organisation working to improve health in the UK and beyond. The new organisation will award over 100,000 qualifications a year, certify products and processes, advise on policy development and serve the needs of over 6,000 members.

UK Public Health Association

The UK Public Health Association (UKPHA) is an independent voluntary organisation, formed by the coming together of three organisations in 1999 to unite the public health movement in the UK. http://www.ukpha.org.uk/

UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists

The UK Voluntary Register for Public Health Specialists provides public protection by ensuring that only competent public health professionals are registered and that high standards of practice are maintained. http://www.publichealthregister.org.uk/

Skills for Health

Skills for Health is the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the UK health sector. We help the whole sector develop solutions that deliver a skilled and flexible UK workforce in order to improve health and healthcare. http://www.skillsforhealth.org.uk/
