Dental Core Training

Dental Core Training (DCT) usually follows on from the first year of Dental Foundation Training (DFT). It offers participants the experience of working in a range of settings and posts including hospitals, community practices and in the community as a whole, promoting wellbeing in a public health role.

This grade runs a maximum of three years (DCT1, DCT2 and DCT3).

DCT trainees also have to attend study days throughout the year. DCT is designed to help you become a well-rounded clinician by improving your clinical skills and by developing other skills such as communication, patient care, time management, research and decision making.

Welcome from the Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean for Dental Core Training - Liz Gruber

A very warm welcome to Dental Core Training (DCT) in the Midlands Region.

The Midlands is a large and diverse region and the DCT posts we offer also vary, both in terms of specialty and setting. We have many DCT posts within hospitals around the region and at the Birmingham Dental Hospital. There are also posts within Community practices. DCT is designed to help you become a well-rounded clinician by improving your clinical skills and by developing other skills such as communication, patient care, time management, quality improvement and decision making.

As Associate Dean for DCT, I work closely with the TPDs and oversee each scheme from a quality assurance perspective and am here to support the DCTs and our Dental Educators.

Your TPD will oversee the regional study programme and support you, together with your Educational Supervisor, Clinical Supervisors and the wider team. Our TPDs are dedicated to ensuring you get the most out of your training year and will be an invaluable source of support for you.

Trainees in the Midlands region benefit from a Postgraduate Virtual Learning Environment (PGVLE platform) with many study resources. There is also a Regional Teaching Programme across both East and West Midlands, with opportunities open to all DCTs in the region. This offers a range of practical courses, simulation training, seminars and a regional presentation day to present your audit and research work.

I am proud of the excellent training provided in the Midlands and we have a committed and motivated team supporting our DCTs across the region.

With best wishes

Liz Gruber
