Unique geography makes for a superb work/life balance

Otolaryngology is one of the most competitive specialties in the UK. If you're looking for high quality training at some of the UK's top facilities then the East Midlands is the place for you.

One of the main benefits of training in Otolaryngology in the East Midlands is because of the unique geography of the region. You'll rotate between placements in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester and each of these major hospitals are only around 30 miles apart. This means you'll face an easy commute to all three hospitals without a need to move house or to spend extensive time away from home.

You'll be able to put down roots, which is particularly attractive if you have a partner working in the region. Road and rail links are excellent and house prices in the East Midlands are 44% lower than in the South East and 62% lower than London.

Train in Otolaryngology in some of the UK's leading centres

When you train in ENT/Otolaryngology in the East Midlands you'll learn from experts in three major teaching hospitals. Leicester and Nottingham are university hospitals with a population catchment of about 1 million each as well as being tertiary centres.

For example, Nottingham is the tertiary referral centre for Otology and Neuro-otology, (Cochlear implants included), rhinology with anterior skull base, facial plastics and paediatric ENT. It is also the regional trauma centre and has on site neurosurgical, cardio-thoracic and plastic surgery services.

If you're successful in coming to the East Midlands on an ENT rotation you will be exposed to all aspects of postgraduate surgical training. You'll be given opportunities to thrive in your chosen areas of research, management and teaching in order to augment the excellent clinical skills that you will acquire.

You'll benefit from first rate clinical exposure with the aim of getting you to consultant level at the end of your ENT training. All our trainees have passed the FRCS (ORL-HNS) at their first sitting since its establishment and  you'll join a programme with excellent results and great career opportunities. All those that have completed their training in the last 5-10 years have gone on to undertake fellowships in their chosen sub-specialty (within the UK and Australia) and then secured a substantive consultant post.

The East Midlands is one of the UK's most popular and thriving regions

Boasting superb tourist attractions, some of the UK's most beautiful countryside and world-class art, culture, music and sport, the East Midlands offers something for everyone.

The major cities of Nottingham, Derby and Leicester offer everything from heritage to great nightlife. Visitors to Nottingham spent £1.5 billion in 2011 - the sixth highest amount in England - while Leicester boasts the biggest Diwali celebrations outside India and the largest Caribbean festival outside Notting Hill. Lonely Planet said that Derby has 'a lot to offer...that you don't get anywhere else in England'.

With nine Universities, world-class theatres and concert venues, Michelin starred restaurants and some of the world's oldest pubs you're also never short of a night out. If you prefer getting out of the city you can enjoy the world renowned Derbyshire Peak District, Sherwood Forest, the National Watersports Centre, Rutland Water, the Derby Velodrome and much more.
