Develop your surgery career at world-famous facilities under the care of nationally renowned experts

"The East Midlands is a fantastic place to complete both Core and Speciality surgical training. Female trainees are particularly supported and encouraged with annual events promoting women in surgical careers with advice for those wishing to pursue similar lifestyles. Many of the female trainees work less than full time and have taken career breaks to raise family. There are also strong links to the Royal Colleges of Surgeons with trainee representatives on ASiT, national trainee speciality groups, ISCP management and the Women in Surgery committee" - Elizabeth Elsey, Trainee

If you want to learn from the best, the East Midlands is the place to undertake your General Surgery training. Five of the consultant trainers are Association of Surgeons of GB and Ireland gold medal winners while you'll also develop your career under the supervision of a member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. You'll also learn from Presidents of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons and the Association of Breast Surgeons while many of our consultants are examiners.

The world-famous breast unit in Nottingham is where the Nottingham Prognostic Index was invented while the region provided the fundamental research that led to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

The region also boasts three Da Vinci robots while the well-established programme even includes a mock FRCS exam to help you prepare for your final assessment.

The East Midlands gives you a great work/life balance

"The East Midlands is geographically compact with the benefit of being able to commute to most centres of training without the upheaval of relocating at regular intervals. The geographical closeness aids development of professional relationships between trainees with ease of socialising and building support and friendships within the group" - Elizabeth Elsey, Trainee

One of the main advantages of training in General Surgery in the East Midlands is that it is easy to travel to your various placements. Unlike other regions which cover large geographical areas, the East Midlands is compact which makes it easy to commute to work. It also means that your children don't have to regularly change school, allowing you to put down roots.

House prices in the region are, on average, 25% lower than the South West and 44% lower than the South East while Nottingham was named in the Sunday Times Top 50 urban places to live in the UK list in 2015.

Lonely Planet named the King Richard III centre in Leicester as one of the hottest 10 new destinations of 2015 while praising Derby, saying it has "a lot to offer...that you don't get anywhere else in England".

With nine universities in the region you're never short of a good night out and you can enjoy world-class concert venues, the UK's oldest comedy festival, the Peak District, Test cricket and Michelin starred restaurants.
