Thanks to the unique geography of the East Midlands, getting around by road and rail is easy. The major cities in the region are only around 30 to 50 miles apart and the rotations are designed to minimise travelling wherever possible.
When you undertake your Internal Medicine Training in the East Midlands you will have weekly bleep free afternoon sessions taking you, over three years, through the whole curriculum. You'll join a scheme designed to give you a wide range of experience in big city and rural hospitals, general medicine, the medical specialties, intensive care medicine and the treatment of chronic disorders. Rotations will be comprised of 4 month attachments in the first 2 years, with 4 months of mandatory Health Care of the Elderly in IM Year 1, and, a 4 month ITU attachment in IM Year 2. The IM3 year will be two 6 month jobs in acute internal medicine and a medical specialty. You will be supported in your work as a junior registrar including growing your confidence to run a take as well as preparing you for higher specialty training. We aim to accommodate 6 months of the specialty of your choice within your IM3 year, with details of the allocation process being communicated as it becomes available.
The hospitals where you will be based are amongst the busiest in the country, providing you with a high volume of work and a wealth and variety of clinical experience. You'll be exposed to both specialist environments (such as haematology and hepatology) but also to unselected admissions, giving you the best of both worlds.
We are committed to teaching and to your future as a hospital consultant. During your time with us we will provide the following;
- Local, specialty and regional in-person induction
- Access to high-quality, experienced college tutors promoting training at every hospital
- A procedural skills course in all three years
- Weekly afternoon bleep-free teaching
- Teaching following a rolling programme covering the IMT curriculum
- Simulation training at IM1 in procedural skills and clinical scenarios and in IM3, on acute medical scenarios/leadership skills, aimed at preparing you to be an ST4
- PACES teaching and mock examinations at some sites
- An IM stage 1 regional conference with inspirational national speakers organised by IMT council
- Management and leadership teaching
- QIP teaching
- Support for less than full time training
If you're interested in research, the region boasts nine Universities. You will have plenty of opportunity for QIP, research, PhDs and medical education while the school encourages 'out of programme' experiences in both research and teaching.
Houses are affordable, both to buy and rent, and you can easily afford to live in the city centre, plush suburbs or picturesque villages.
*Please note that due to individual Trust service reconfigurations, occasionally some post specialties may change.
