Develop your career with a great training programme at the world's biggest ECMO centre
There are lots of reasons to train in Paediatric Cardiology in the East Midlands, not least because you'll be based for two years at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, one of just ten congenital heart centres in England and Wales.
When you train in Paediatric Cardiology in the East Midlands you'll also benefit from experience in Europe's biggest ECMO centre. Glenfield Hospital in Leicester is one of the world’s busiest ECMO centres and the only hospital in the UK to provide ECMO therapy for both adults and children. It is also registered with the Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation (ELSO) and is one of the world's most experienced hospitals in using ECMO.
The East Midlands Paediatric Cardiology training programme offers a range of procedures and experiences not available elsewhere in the UK. As well as exposure to a wide range of patients of all ages on a day-to-day basis - you'll experience foetal to old age cardiology - you'll also perform a full range of cardiac interventional and surgical procedures.
Lots of research opportunities with internationally renowned experts
As well as a high quality training programme based at one of the world's leading facilities you'll also have some great research opportunities. We have close links with the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Nottingham and the British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre in Leicester.
Research grants are available and our trainees are involved with a lot of collaborative research. We also have close links with the Adult Arhythmia Service, the Adult Acquired Heart Disease service as well as the Foetal Medicine team in Leicester. All this means you will be able to pursue your own interests within the specialty.
The East Midlands is a thriving and vibrant region, just an hour from London and Birmingham
One of the main advantages of working in the East Midlands is that the superb transport links make it easy for you to reach your training placements without having to move home. Birmingham and London are around an hour away by train and the superb motorway network and East Midlands Airport mean it's easy to reach the rest of the UK and beyond.
House prices in the region are 62% lower than London and 44% lower than the South East while the area is rich in culture and heritage. Leicester's King Richard III Visitor's Centre is one of the most popular new tourist attractions in the country while Twycross Zoo boasts over 150 species of animal.
In your time off you can enjoy the country's most established comedy festival, the biggest Diwali celebrations outside India and the largest Caribbean carnival outside Notting Hill.
