The East Midlands gives you excellent GU Medicine experience
GU medicine (often called Sexual Health and HIV) is an exciting and dynamic specialty and is a very satisfying branch of medicine since most sexually transmitted infections can be cured or managed successfully and patients are often vulnerable or marginalized and stigmatized.
The East Midlands rotation offers full inpatient and outpatient HIV training for the duration of you 4 years, without needing to travel elsewhere for inpatient HIV experience. This means you will be exposed to a greater volume of rare opportunistic diseases than programmes offering only a 6 month ward attachment.
The East Midlands program also encompasses training in the full breath of sexual health conditions, from psychosexual medicine, to young person’s clinics, sexual assault, genital dermatoses and many sub-specialist HIV services such as hepatitis/HIV co-infection and antenatal HIV care.
You'll gain experience in sexual health services which provide outreach services for hard to reach groups such as adolescents, commercial sex workers and high risk men who have sex with men (MSM).

Close placements mean you don't have to move home or commute long distances
The two main city hospitals are in Nottingham and Leicester and with both having some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infection outside London you'll be faced with lots of interesting clinical challenges. You'll gain experience in two of England's top ten cities and with a catchment area of millions you'll deal with relatively large cohorts of patients with HIV infection.
Your training will be based in Nottingham with a placement for a maximum of 1 year in Leicester. The cities are geographically close and well linked with public transport meaning you won't have to move home or commute long distances for the duration of your training programme.
Out Of Programme Experiences are encouraged and we have links with HIV centers in developing countries such as Botswana and Thailand. You'll also have the chance to undertake a research degree (OOPR).
As sexual health – and in particular HIV - is a rapidly evolving, exciting field, there are many opportunities for you to gain experience in clinical trials, to attend national and international conferences and to develop specialist interests.
