“Being a foundation doctor supervisor has given me the opportunity not only to educate on a regular basis but to mentor engaged professionals and see them grow. I’m still in touch with many of my ex-foundation doctors, the majority of whom have been influenced by their attachments and chosen careers in general practice.” Dr Ben Noble
Case study: Dr Nichola Harcombe
I did the new trainers course as part of a fellowship post CCT, I started supervising foundation doctors the year before I was able to have a GP registrar and it was a great way of practicing my education skills, facilitating tutorials, undertaking WPBAs etc.
In my experience foundation doctors are a varied bunch of doctors, they have different skill ranges to GP registrars and come to the post with enthusiasm and an open mind. I have learnt from them more about the hospital environment and conversely they get an insight into the hospital to GP relationship even if they end up not going into GP training. This can only be a positive thing in terms of colleague relationships.
In terms of the level at which they work, it is similar to an ST1 or ST2 registrar, as a CS, portfolio interaction required is quite minimal. They like the autonomy they get in learning to consult independently, seeing patients in their own clinics. In my practice we give them the responsibility of supporting the local nursing homes and they seem to enjoy the chance to build those relationships.
