Director of Foundation Training

Dr Robert Powell commenced his post as Director of Foundation Training in June 2016. He is responsible for the strategic development of foundation training within Health Education England in the East Midlands. Dr Powell has been actively involved in the development of foundation training within the East Midlands since its inception in 2005; he has held various posts in education including  lead clinical tutor, lead FTPD for UHL, deputy DME and is a Consultant Anaesthetist at University Hospitals of Leicester. He trained at Nottingham Medical School and the South West Thames (RAMC) and Leicester training programmes.

Associate Foundation School Directors


Dr Rachel Parry commenced in post in August 2018 as Associate Foundation School Director for LNR.  Dr Parry is responsible for the overall management of foundation training delivered across Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. Dr Parry was previously a GP Programme Director in the East Midlands.                         


Dr Charlie Mackaness  commenced in post in August 2018 as Associate Foundation School Director for Trent, having previously undertaken the role for LNR since 2014.  Dr Mackaness is responsible for the overall management of foundation training delivered across Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Prior to becoming Associate Foundation School Director, Dr Mackaness was a Foundation Training Programme Director at her base hospital here in the East Midlands.

Foundation Schools Account Manager

Denise Barber is the Foundation Schools Account Manager with lead responsibility for foundation training within the East Midlands. She is responsible for developing and maintaining both the LNR and Trent foundation schools and its programmes in conjunction with colleagues within and external to HEE EM. Denise chairs the school’s meetings of the Foundation Programme Coordinators Committee.

Recruitment and Programmes Team

The team leads on all aspects of Foundation Recruitment for the LNR and Trent Foundation School, covering both academic and national recruitment processes. Faculty Support

Nicola Barbosa (0116 478 8655) is the Medical Educaiton Co-ordinator for foundation training, supporting the Associate Foundation School Directors and the Foundation Schools Account Manager.

Jaz Johal is based within a local Trust and she supports the Foundation Schools in administrating the mandatory Generic Skills Training and Foundation Choices courses.  Trainees should contact Jaz with queries regarding Course Manager, Generic Skills Training and Choices courses.
