Broad experience on a 2 year linked programme
When you come to the East Midlands for your Foundation Training you'll benefit from a two year linked programme. With rotations carefully designed to include geographically close locations you'll benefit from a range of experiences without needing to move home.
As well as a mixture of big teaching hospitals and district general hospitals your Foundation Training will also include:
- Community placements in psychiatry, public health or general practice
- At least two days high-fidelity simulation training
- Psychiatry training with simulated patients
You'll also benefit from dedicated careers support and the choice of a suite of courses that match your career aspirations, including surgical skills, paediatric life support and teaching skills.

Once your Foundation Training is complete you will have plenty of opportunity to continue your career, whether in medicine, general practice or another specialty. London is just 67 minutes by train from Leicester while 90% of England's population live within two hours of Nottingham. Derby is England's most central city and with major motorways and East Midlands Airport on your doorstep it's easy to reach the rest of the UK and beyond.
The region also boasts world-class concert venues, great nightlife, Michelin star restaurants, international sport and some of the country's most important heritage sites.
NHS England Enhance Foundation Programme
The Enhance Foundation Programme is a postgraduate medical education offer designed to equip healthcare professionals with generalist skills to work in an increasingly challenging health system. This complexity arises from three main areas: increasing patient complexity (ageing population and rising multimorbidity), increasing societal complexity (socio-economic and political factors affecting population health and environmental sustainability), and increasing system complexity (more layers of management and leadership than ever before, with blurred lines between primary and secondary care).
In response to these challenges, the Enhance programme hopes to create a future workforce that is able to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams, deliver person-centred care, reduce health inequalities and improve population health.
Foundation doctors can get involved in the Enhance programme in two different ways:
- Enhance Enable – Work through the online Enhance Foundation modules at your own pace via the PGVLE, with support from your clinical or educational supervisor. Modules cover the following topics: person-centred practice, complex co-morbidity, system working, population health, social justice and health equity, and environmental sustainability. This is open to all Foundation doctors in training and certificates are available for each module completed.
- Enhance Explore – Apply via Oriel to access bespoke Enhance priority programmes which include protected time for generalist and community placement activities. This may involve attending community services or third-sector organisations for a broader understanding of health priorities in the region.
In addition, to gain the Enhance Certificate of Contextual Leadership, Foundation doctors in training will need to complete a project using quality improvement methodology during their two-year foundation training programme.
